To understand it

What somatic coaching is

What it is, where it comes from and what it is for. It is one of the tools I use inside my individual processes.

The idea

Soma means the lived body

Somatic comes from soma: the body as you live it from the inside. Somatic coaching works with that information. It asks what you think, and then it looks at what happens in you as you think it.

Your body registers what you live before you can put it into words.

Many answers are already in how you breathe, how you hold yourself and where you carry tension.

A pattern held in the body takes longer to shift, and that is exactly why the change lasts.

You do not need to understand everything to start letting it go.

The concepts

Four ideas that explain it

(01)

Nervous system

Your body moves between states: alert, rest, calm. They are responses, not flaws. Knowing which one you are in is where everything starts, because each state makes some things possible and others not.

(02)

Body awareness

Noticing what happens inside: breathing, weight, tension, rhythm. It is trained like strength, and the sharper it gets, the sooner you notice what you need.

(03)

Regulation

Coming back to a state you can be in and decide from. More than relaxing, it is recovering room to move, with tools that work in the middle of an ordinary day.

(04)

Patterns

Ways of responding that repeat and live in the body. They show in posture and gesture long before they show in the story you tell, and that is where they can be worked with.

Your body has been talking to you.
This is learning to listen.

What it is for

What we work on from here

Coming down properly at the end of the day.

Releasing the tension that keeps returning to the same place.

Resting in a way that actually restores you.

Deciding from calm rather than from urgency.

Holding on to your habits through the difficult weeks too.

Training with a sense of what is happening inside, not only outside.

It sits very well alongside psychological therapy and does not replace it. If I think therapy would help you, I will say so honestly.

How it fits

A tool, not a product

Somatic coaching is one of the tools I use inside my individual processes, together with training, breathing, habits and coaching. On its own it does only part of the work.
